About:

Pichwai painting traces its origins over 400 years ago to Nathdwara, near Udaipur in Rajasthan, India. These exquisite artworks, created on cloth, vividly portray narratives from Lord Krishna's life. Each pichwai demands meticulous craftsmanship, often taking months to complete due to the intricate detailing. Central to pichwai art is the depiction of Lord Krishna as Shrinathji, the youthful manifestation of divinity. Other recurrent motifs include Radha, gopis, cows, and lotuses, capturing festive occasions such as Sharad Purnima, Raas Leela, and Janmashtami.

The term "Pichwai" derives from 'pichh' (meaning back) and 'wai' (textile hanging). Originally commissioned by the Pushti Marg sect, founded by Shri Vallabhacharya in the 16th century, these paintings adorned the temple of Shrinathji (Shrinathji ki Haveli) in Nathdwara, enhancing celebrations throughout the year. While traditionally confined to religious settings, pichwai paintings have also gained favor among art aficionados for their aesthetic allure. Like many traditional Indian art forms, the art of pichwai is in need of preservation and revitalization amidst modern times.
